A wastegate is a valve that controls the flow of exhaust gas into the turbocharger, preventing boost pressure from exceeding a safe level. In a basic turbo system, the exhaust spins the turbine, which creates boost—but without a wastegate, pressure would keep rising until engine damage occurs. There are two main types: internal wastegates, built into the turbo and common in OEM setups, and external wastegates, standalone units that offer greater control and superior flow. Whether mechanically or electronically operated, a wastegate acts like a pressure-relief valve for your turbo, ensuring stable, safe and predictable boost levels.
Benefits of Wastegates
Wastegates prevent turbochargers from producing excessive boost pressure. Without one, a turbo would continue to build speed until something failed, usually the engine. The wastegate opens to divert exhaust away from the turbine wheel, regulating boost accurately under all conditions.

With the right tuning, boost builds more gradually. And this reduces turbo lag, whilst helping larger turbochargers come on sooner without unstable surges.
Excess exhaust gas is diverted away from the turbine when pressure rises, which helps keep temperatures and backpressure under control. Lower thermal stress on surrounding components follows, which is particularly important in demanding environments. In motorsport applications, stable boost control often leads to quicker launches, stronger acceleration out of corners, steadier lap times and fewer reliability issues over long runs.
External vs Internal Wastegates
The key difference between internal and external wastegates comes down to design and use. An internal wastegate is located inside the turbocharger housing. And because everything is contained in a single unit, the setup remains compact and relatively affordable, making it common on OEM vehicles and moderate-performance builds. Boost control is generally sufficient for lower power levels, although flow capacity and adjustability are limited.
External wastegates are separate components mounted directly on the exhaust manifold. This allows for greater exhaust flow and more precise control over boost pressure. Durability is also typically higher, particularly in high-heat environments. External systems are usually the preferred option for engines running higher power levels or track-focused setups.
Modern Applications in Motorsport & Tuning
Wastegates are used strategically across different forms of motorsport, with each discipline demanding its own approach. In rally and time attack, wastegates must react instantly to rapid throttle changes and often work in conjunction with anti-lag systems, so they can maintain stable boost during tight, technical driving. In drag racing, external wastegates combine with CO₂ boost control systems, this is to maintain exact boost targets for consistent launches and smooth gear shifts. For street builds, internal wastegates are paired with modern electronic controllers to offer a strong balance of performance, reliability, and everyday drivability. Ultimately, the choice of wastegate depends on power goals, racing style, and how aggressively the car is used.
